This week saw Amsterdam host the pentennial Sail event, in which a plethora of sailing ships from around the world cram themselves into the IJ and sail around in a great celebration of a mode of transport that proved so important to Dutch culture and prosperity.

I was lucky enough to spend an evening onboard an old Dutch herring boat, and it provided the perfect vantage point to take in the event and enjoy what turned out to be a beautiful evening (which wasn’t assured after a week that started with some fairly torrential rain!)
